Caurus offers Spanish class to all students. Kindergarten students attend Spanish class once a week, 1st -5th grades attend Spanish class twice a week, and 6th-8th grades attend Spanish class three times a week. Additional focus in 6th-8th grades includes preparing students for high school Spanish by using more advanced curriculum such as conjugating of verbs as well as implementing opportunities to have conversations in Spanish.

Our Spanish classes are designed according to best practices which follow six state standards. The six standards are:

Standard 1: Communication

Students understand and interpret written and spoken communication on a variety of topics in the target language.

Standard 2: Communication

Students know and are able to do the following: greet people, make small talk, express feelings, give and follow directions, etc.

Standard 3: Communication

Students know and are able to do the following: recite short and simple materials with appropriate expression, write or orally present short messages, perform short plays, poems, songs, etc.

Standard 4: Culture

Students know ‘what to do when” and “what to say while doing it” in the culture and use this knowledge to interact appropriately. They also understand the relationships between cultural perspectives, products, and practices within cultures.

Standard 5: Connection

Students use the target language and authentic sources to reinforce and/or learn other content from the other subject areas.

Standard 6: Comparisons

Students develop insights into their own language and their own culture through the study of the target language.
