Caurus offers Spanish class to all students. Kindergarten students attend Spanish class once a week, 1st -5th grades attend Spanish class twice a week, and 6th-8th grades attend Spanish class three times a week. Additional focus in 6th-8th grades includes preparing students for high school Spanish by using more advanced curriculum such as conjugating of verbs as well as implementing opportunities to have conversations in Spanish.
Our Spanish classes are designed according to best practices which follow six state standards. The six standards are:
Standard 1: Communication
Students understand and interpret written and spoken communication on a variety of topics in the target language.
Standard 2: Communication
Students know and are able to do the following: greet people, make small talk, express feelings, give and follow directions, etc.
Standard 3: Communication
Students know and are able to do the following: recite short and simple materials with appropriate expression, write or orally present short messages, perform short plays, poems, songs, etc.
Standard 4: Culture
Students know ‘what to do when” and “what to say while doing it” in the culture and use this knowledge to interact appropriately. They also understand the relationships between cultural perspectives, products, and practices within cultures.
Standard 5: Connection
Students use the target language and authentic sources to reinforce and/or learn other content from the other subject areas.
Standard 6: Comparisons
Students develop insights into their own language and their own culture through the study of the target language.
Resources Utilized in the Spanish Classroom
Kindergarten through 5th grade: We use Teach Them Spanish books for along with videos, songs, and teacher made games to enrich the overall learning experience of the students. Students in kindergarten through 5th also participate in dance as well as field trip opportunities.
6th through 8th grade: We use Glencoe Spanish textbooks along with videos, songs and teacher made games to enrich the overall learning experience of the students. Students also have the experience of writing to a pen pal in Mexico as well as participating in dance and field trip opportunities.
